Grants for new roofs and fire safety coming for California homeowners
California Launches Safe Homes Grants to Help With Fire Safety Upgrades
Starting January 1st 2026, California has launched a new Safe Homes grant program designed to help homeowners in high wildfire-risk areas pay for critical home hardening projects. Under this state law, low and moderate-income residents could receive financial support for improvements like fire-safe roofs and the creation of a 5-foot ember-resistant “Zone 0” around their homes — an important step in reducing wildfire dangers.
The program is being set up by the California Department of Insurance, which plans to open an online application portal in the spring of 2026. Eligibility will depend on factors such as where you live, your income, and whether your home is insured through a licensed carrier or the FAIR Plan.
Initially funded with about $3 million in the state budget, lawmakers and department officials are developing details including how much homeowners might receive and how grants will be distributed. Local governments and community mitigation projects may also be eligible for funding.
This grant program aims to make homes safer and more resilient as wildfire risks grow across the state. Schedule your assessment with California Wildfire Group today so you’re ready to apply for the new grants, if eligible.
