Wildfire Insurance Discounts for California Homeowners

Amid rising wildfire risk, homeowners in California and Oregon now have a new way to save on their insurance premiums by proactively reducing wildfire risk around their homes.

There is a new certification program tied to wildfire preparedness helping make insurance more affordable for those willing to take mitigation steps. Through a partnership involving Mercury Insurance and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), policyholders in high-risk wildfire areas can apply for the Wildfire Prepared Home designation.

To apply, homeowners pay a fee and complete the requirements for Wildfire Prepared Home certification (such as creating defensible space, using fire-resistant building materials, and keeping vegetation managed). Once certified, they may become eligible for discounts on the catastrophe fire portion of their insurance premiums. After certification, homeowners must also keep up with maintenance and provide annual updates to IBHS.

If you’re in the market for new insurance or an insurance discount, this may the route for you. Contact California Wildfire Group to review your eligibility and submit the requirements.
